アップセット( Upset )
「ひっくり返す」「失敗させる」「気を動転させる」「胃の調子が悪い」「あわてる」。発音は「アプセット」。
落ち着けよ〜！＝ Don't upset yourself !
番狂わせだった〜。＝ It was a big upset.
彼は胃を悪くしている。＝ He has an upset stomach.
アンサー( Answer ）
「答える」「応じる」「望みが叶う」「電話に出る」。
彼は電話に出た。＝ He answered the phone.
私はドアのノックに答えた。＝ I answered the door.
彼は私に返事を書いた。＝ He answered my letter.
私の望みは叶った。＝ My wishes were answered.
イート ( Eat )
「食べる」「スープ等をスプーンで飲む」「食い荒らす」「蝕む」「悩ます」「食べ物」。

カム ( Come )
「来る」「生ずる」「〜になる」「変わる」。

「保つ」「取っておく」「守る「続ける」「飼う」。

ギブ( Give )
「与える」「渡す」「風邪などをうつす」「贈る」「言う」「寄付する」。
誰かに風邪をうつされた。＝ Somebody has given me a cold.
君はタバコをやめるべきだ。＝ You should give up smoking.
参りました。（分かりません）＝ I give up.
彼も折れて私の意見に従った。＝ He has given in to me.
ゲット( Get ）
「得る」「取る」「到達する」「分かる」。
私の言うことが分かりますか〜？＝ Do you get me ?
分かった。＝ I got it.
いい考えがある。＝ I've got an idea.

彼らはそりが合わない。（あう）＝ They get along badly.（well）

ゴー ( Go )
「行く」「動く」「進む」「去る」「通る」。発音は「ゴウ」。
すべて上手くいった。＝ Everything went well.

あっちへ行け〜！＝ Go away !
彼は約束を破った。＝ He went back on his word.
彼は事務所に立ち寄った。＝ He went by his office.
彼は医者を呼びに行った。＝ He went for a doctor.
コール( Call )
「呼ぶ」「招く」「電話をかける」「称する」「〜と考える」「眠っている人を起こす」「宣言する」「予想する」。
タクシーを呼んでください。＝ Please call me a taxi.
後で電話下さい。＝ Call me later.
日曜日にお伺いいたします。＝ I'll call on you on Sunday.
今日はこれでおしまいにしよう。＝ Let's call it a day.
７時に起こしてくれ〜！＝ Call me up at 7.
シー( See ）
「見る」「見える」「会う」「分かる」。
ほらね〜わかったでしょう〜？＝ You see ?
分かりました。＝ I see.
お会いできて嬉しいです。＝ I'm glad to see you.
(初対面では〜) ＝ I'm glad to meet you.
じゃあ、またね〜！＝ See you !
ショウ ( Show )
「見せる」「示す」「上演する」「展示する」「案内する」「証明する」「見せ物」「展示会」「番組」。
お見せしましょう〜。＝ Let me show you.
東京駅にはどういくのですか〜？＝ Show me the way to Tokyo Station, please.
彼は姿を見せなかった。＝ He didn't show up.
彼は人気をさらった。＝ He stole the show.
彼は自分を見せびらかす。＝ He always shows off.
スピーク ( Speak )
「話す」「演説する」「示す」「物語る」。
それは大したことではない。＝ That's nothing to speak of.
遠慮なく言って下さい。＝ Please speak up.
彼女は彼を弁護した。＝ She spoke up for him.
彼女は彼に反対した。＝ She spoke against him.
それは自ずから明らかだ。＝ It speaks for itself.
彼女は彼をけなす。＝ She speaks ill of him.
セイ( Say )
「言う」「話す」「示す」。間投詞として「まあ〜、そうですね〜」。
[saying] で「ことわざ、格言」の意味がある。
まさか〜！＝ You don't say !
言うまでもなく彼は有望です。＝ Without saying, he is a promising youg man.
さあ〜ちょっと分からないね。＝ I can't say.
ちょっと、そこの君〜！＝ Say, there !
私はそうでないと思う。＝ I should say not.
セット( Set ）
「置く」「定める」「準備する」。「舞台装置」「道具一式」「髪のセット」「仲間」「一群」。
[set about]= 着手する。[set out]= 出発する。[set aside]= 将来の為に取っておく。
準備できた〜？・・ 出来たよ〜。＝ All set ? ... All set !
この仕事は後廻しにしよう。＝ Let's set this job aside until later.
あんな所へは二度と行かないぞ〜。＝ I'll never set foot in that place again !
彼女を見た瞬間、虜になった。＝ I fell for her the moment I set eyes on her.
チェイス ( Chase )
「追いかける」「狩る」。「追跡」「追求」。
ジムは彼女を追いかけている（求愛）。＝ Jim is chasing her.
彼を追い出せ〜！＝ Chase him out !
警官は強盗を追って山に入った。＝ The policeman went up the mountain in chase of the robber.
テイク ( Take )
「取る」「受取る」「つかむ」。 [take up]= 取り上げる。[take off]= 脱ぐ、離陸する。[take away]= 取去る。
これを下さい。＝ I'll take this.
誤解しないでね。＝ Don't take me wrong.
彼は父親にそっくりだ。＝ He takes after his father.
僕の言葉を信じてくれ。＝ Take my word.
彼は僕に八つ当たりした。＝ He took it out on me.
ドウウ( Do )
「する」「行う」「遂行する」「果たす」。
[do in] で「破滅させる」「壊す」。[have to do with ...]= 〜と関係がある。
それで結構だ〜！＝ That will do.
すっかり疲れてしまった。＝ I'm done.
この新聞、もう宜しいですか〜？＝ Have you done with the newspaper ?
私は彼とは何の関係もありません。＝ I have nothing to do with him.
彼は仕事相手とすれば大変付き合いにくい。＝ He is very difficult to do business with.
彼らは彼を破滅させた。＝ They did in him.
トライ( Try ）
「試す」「試食する」「悩ます」「苦しめる」「試練を与える」「裁判にかける」。
精一杯やれ〜！＝ Try your best !
もう少し努力しろ〜。＝ Try harder !
これ試しては〜？＝ Try this one ! (食べ物、飲み物、衣服等・・)
彼は盗みで裁判にかけられた。＝ He was tried for theft.
ノウ ( Know )
「知る」「分かる」。
彼女に何が起きたか知るすべもない。＝ There's no knowing what happened to her.
おやおや、本当ですか〜？＝ I want to know !
その手は食わないぞ〜。＝ I know better.
年甲斐もない〜！＝ You should know better !
彼は自分の立場をわきまえている。＝ He knows his place.
私の知る限りそんなことはない〜！＝ Not that I know of.
それは驚いた〜！（まさか〜！）＝ What do you know !
その事は後で知った。＝ It came to my knowledge later.
私の知る限り、彼女は未だ独身だ。＝ To my knowledge, she is still single.
彼は何でも知っている(知ったかぶりをする)。＝ He's a know-all(know-it-all).
ノック ( Knock )
「コツンとたたく」「ノックする」「ぶつかる」「強打する」。
私は彼女の美しさにガーンとなった。＝ I was knocked down by her beauty.
彼は仕事を手早く仕上げた。＝ He knocked off work early.
彼はタクシーにはねられた。＝ He was knocked down by a taxi.
ハブ( Have )
「持つ」「経験する」「食べる」「〜させる」「だます」。
[ have it in for ] = 「〜に恨みをいだく」。[ have something on ] = 「〜の弱点を握っている」。
私は彼の弱点を握っている。＝ I have something on him.
私は彼に仕返しをした。＝ I had it out with him.
もう行った方がいいよ〜(目下の人に使う)。＝ You'd better go now.
一杯やろうよ〜。＝ Let's have a drink.
えらい目にあったよ〜。＝ I had quite an experience.
ハング( Hang ）
「掛ける」「吊るす」。
[ hang around ]= 「うろつく」。 [ hang back ]= 「ためらう」。 [ hang behind]=「ぐずぐずする」。 [ hang on ]=「すがりつく」「がんばる」「電話を切らずに待つ」。
[ hang up ]= 「電話を切る」「中止する」。 [ hangover ]= 「二日酔い」... 「迎え酒」は[a hair of the dog]。
電話を切らないで〜＝ Don't hang up ! [hold on]は事務的なニュアンス。
彼はそこらをブラブラしている。＝ He's always hanging around.
その囚人の運命は微妙なところだ。＝ The prisoner's fate is hanging in the balance.
決定は来週の月曜日まで延ばそう。＝ Let's hang fire until next Monday.
多くの車が渋滞していた。＝ There were many cars hung up in traffic.
プッシュ ( Push )
「押す」「せがむ」「ごり押しする」。 「押しの強い」＝ [ pushing, pushful ]。
時間に追われている。＝ I'm pushed for time.
彼は金に困っている。＝ He is pushed for money.
彼はでしゃばりだ。＝ He's a pushful person.
彼は押しが強い。＝ He is a man full of push.
彼女は彼に支払いを督促した。＝ She pushed him for payment.
彼はかれこれ７０歳だ。＝ He must be pushing 70 now.
彼は部下をこき使う。＝ He pushes his men around.
プット ( Put )
「置く」「すえる」「入れる」「整える」「預ける」「課す」「書く」「言う」。
私は本をかばんに入れた。＝ I put my book in my bag.
彼女は部屋を片付けた。＝ She put her room in order.
彼は息子を大学に入れた。＝ He put his son in college.
彼は土地に投資した。＝ He put his money into land.
こういう風に言いたい。＝ Let me put it this way.
彼女は小金を蓄えた。＝ She put a little money away.
彼は家を買うのを見合わせた。＝ He put off his plan to buy a house.
私は少々の不便は辛抱せねばならない。＝ I have to put up with some inconviniences.
彼ははったりをかけた。＝ He put up a bluff.
プル( Pull )
「引く」「（顧客などを）引き付ける」。熟語として使う事が多い。
[pull apart]= 離れる、引き離す、こき下ろす、〜のアラを探す。
[pull at]= 一杯引っ掛ける。
しっかりして下さい（落ち着いて下さい）。＝ Pull yourself together.
彼は浮かぬ顔をした。＝ He pulled a long face.
ヤツを懲らしめてやった(耳を引っ張った)。＝ I pulled him by the ear.
私は彼をこき下ろした。＝ I pulled him apart.
私は道路の横に車をつけた。＝ I pulled over to the curb.
あの会社にはコネがある。＝ I have a little pull with that company.
プレー( Play ）
「遊ぶ」「賭ける」「〜の振りをする」。
[playfully]= 「ふざけて」。 [play on]= 「冗談を言う、〜を仕掛ける」。 [play out]=「疲れ切る」。
彼は彼女をからかった。＝ He made a play for her.
彼は私にひどい仕打ちをした。＝ He played a mean trick on me.
彼は仮病を使った。＝ He played sick.
彼はへとへとになった。＝ He was played out.
彼は最後の切り札を使った。＝ He played his last card.
ペイ ( Pay )
「支払う」「借金などを返す」「〜に利益になる」「儲かる」。
それは割に合わないよ。＝ It doesn't pay.
私は現金主義です。＝ "Pay-as-you-go" is my motto.
給料袋を受け取りましたか〜？＝ Did you get your pay envelop ?
近くに公衆電話がありますか？＝ Is there a pay station (pay telephone) near here ?
彼女は軽はずみな結婚に苦しんでいる。＝ She is paying for her hasty marriage.
ヘルプ ( Help )
「助ける」「救う」「手伝う」「成長する」「役に立つ」。
[helpful]= 役に立つ。 [helpless]= 無力な、無能な。
そうするより仕方なかった。＝ I couldn't help it.
どうぞ自由にお召上がり下さい。＝ Please help yourself !.
それはなんとも致し方ない。＝ There's no help for it.
蜂蜜は咳の薬になる。＝ Honey helps a cough.
神は自ら助けるものを助ける。＝ God helps those who help themselves.
彼女は赤ん坊みたいに無力だ。＝ She's just like a helpless baby.
ホープ( Hope )
「希望する」。名詞で「希望」「期待」。
彼は彼女がいずれは結婚してくれると希望を持って生きている。＝ He lives in hope that she'll eventually marry him.
お気に召せばと思います。(贈り物をした時の定番表現)＝ I hope you like it.
すべての望みは失われた。＝ All hope is gone.( All が単数扱いになっている。)
「命あってのものだね」ですよね〜。＝ Well, "While there's life, there's hope".
私は、いい事もあるだろう〜と望みは捨てない。＝ I'm hoping for the best.
彼は有望な青年だ。＝ He is a hopeful young man.
ホールド( Hold ）
「手に持つ」「捕まえる」「保つ」「心に抱く」「差し控える」など。
[hold on]= 「続ける、電話を切らずに待つ」。 [hold back]= 「押さえる」。
彼は頭をかかえた。＝ He held his head in his hands.
戸を開けっ放しにしておいて〜。＝ Hold the door open.
この部屋には５０人入ります。＝ This room can hold 50 people.
得易いものは失い易い。＝ Lightly won, lightly held.
彼女は手に負えないよ。＝ There is no holding her.
黙っていろ〜！＝ Hold your tongue (noise) !
この天気が続けばいいね〜！＝ I hope the weather will hold.
今やっている事を続けなさい〜＝ Hold on what you're doing now.
彼女は涙をこらえた。＝ She held back her tears.
ミス ( Miss )
「はずす」「取り逃がす」「寂しく思う」。名詞で「失敗」。
３分でその電車に乗り遅れた。＝ I missed the train by three minutes.
君がいなくなると寂しくなるよ。＝ We'll miss you.
すぐ分かりますよ＝ You can't miss it.
メイク ( Make )
「作る」「生じさせる」「得る」「儲ける」「する」「させる」。
[make away with~]= 〜を持去る。 [make up to~]= 〜に取り入れる。
そんな音をたてるな〜。＝ Don't make such a noise !
２たす３は５。＝ Two and three make five.
やった〜！＝ I made it !
彼女は知ったかぶりをする。＝ She makes as if she knows everything.
彼はその金を持ち逃げした。＝ He made away with the money.
彼は彼女に言い寄った。＝ He tried to make up to her.
これは自家製です。＝ This is our own make.
急げば間に合いますよ。＝ You'll make it if you hurry.
メンション( Mention )
「話に出す」「ふれる」「名をあげる」。
どういたしまして〜。＝ Don't mention it.
彼はそのことに触れた＝ He mentioned it.
あなたの名前が出てましたよ。＝ Your name was mentioned.
あなたの名前を彼に言っておきました。＝ I mentioned your name to him.
その事は言っておく価値がある。＝ That's worth mentioning.
リバース( Reverse ）
「逆にする」。車のバックギアのマーク「Ｒ」は [ Reverse ](逆回転させる)の頭文字。
彼は自説をひるがえした。＝ He reversed himself.
我々の立場は逆転した。＝ Our positions have been reversed.
逆転判決がなされた。＝ The decision was reversed.
彼らは敗北を喫した。＝ They suffered a reverse.
それは全く逆だよ。＝ It's quite the reverse.
ワーク ( Work )
「働く」「動く」「回転する」「具合よくいく」「効き目がある」。名詞で「仕事」。
明日は出勤ですか？＝ Are you working tomorrow ?
今日の仕事は何時までですか？＝ Until what time do you work today ?
だめだ！上手くいかない。＝ It doesn't work.
上手くいっている。＝ It works well.
この薬よく効くよ。＝ This medicine works well.
